Difficult...

The following article is an excerpt from a speech given by a direct seller at a local meeting. We are told she was asked to speak on how direct sales compares to working a “regular” job. It was submitted to us, and although the original author is unknown, we wish to thank her for her thoughts and insights. We have edited it to share with you as you embark on a brand new opportunity to count the many blessings we have in this business.

Lately, I have heard so many people say how difficult direct sales is. “It’s hard.” “I can’t get bookings.” “This just isn’t for me.” “I didn’t know how difficult it would be.”

Well, I am a single mom of three who, before joining the direct sales family, held down two jobs. I would get up at 4:00 in the morning and not get to bed until midnight most nights, after returning from my part-time retail job, packing lunches, checking homework and relieving my mother, who helped out with the kids.

That, my friends, is difficult.

It is difficult always having to lower your dreams to meet your means. It is difficult to miss your son’s football game because you have to work. It is difficult knowing the rust bucket you call a car is eating you alive in maintenance, but you can’t afford a new one. It is difficult to realize that someone else is going to watch your daughter take her first step or have your son say mama to the preschool teacher.

It is difficult knowing that you have spent 40 years of your life working for someone else, only to realize that you will be retiring on one-third of what you can live on today. Or, worse yet, it is difficult knowing that you have diligently worked all your life, only to be given an early retirement and be replaced by someone younger, more capable.

I will tell you what is difficult. It is difficult waking up one morning and realizing that your children, the most precious things imaginable, no longer need bottles, diapers, have tea parties, or are shorter than the baseball bat they are trying to swing. It is difficult realizing it is too late and that the time frittered away can never be retrieved. It slips through our fingers one second at a time.

It is also difficult watching the spark in your partner’s eyes fade because both of you realize the house you have been wanting is just a dream because someone else is controlling your finances.

We have nasty habits about rationalizing, procrastination and skirting important things, rather than facing the issues. Too often we allow others who do not pay our bills, who do not share our dreams, to direct our futures.

As children we have absolutely no freedom; we rebel in our teens and scream for freedom. We reach adulthood and are finally free, only to relinquish that freedom because we think it is too difficult. We do not want to take responsibility. We do not want to make a wrong decision, so we obligingly give that awesome power to someone else. We wake up too late. We hear ourselves uttering phrases like: “I wish I had only…” And “If I could do it over again…”

You have no one but yourself to blame. You had the chance. Perhaps the Opportunity was presented many times and each time you elevated the trivial to a higher priority than yourself.

Let me ask you: Is direct sales really difficult?

Is it so traumatic to show someone an exciting product or idea? Is it so difficult to understand that if you work this marketing idea for three to five years, you just might finally be able to send your children to a college chosen by excellence, rather than one chosen by price? That you could finally put your family in the home of their dreams?

Would you work really hard for eight to ten years, so you could mold a lifestyle of your choosing, so your family could live a lifestyle of their dreams, rather than trying to live how someone else thinks you should live?

How difficult is it to pick up the phone and call your hostess? How difficult is it to pack up your kit and meet some new friends? How difficult is it, really, to share what you love with others? Think about it.

Realize the awesome power you have in your hands with direct sales. There are people out there working three jobs. There are people drowning in debt; or agonizing through bankruptcy, realizing they only needed a couple hundred more dollars per month. That is difficult!!

This business you have chosen has the ability to change lives. Direct sales cannot do anything. But YOU can change lives with it. You are the one with the life-changing ability. What are you waiting for?

There is difficulty and pain in success, and there is difficulty and pain in failure. Difficulty and pain in success will last a short period of time but pain in failure lasts a lifetime. Which one is really more difficult?

You will pay a price for your actions and your choices.

Which choice will you make?

Strong Women

I had the privilege of helping my Director and a good friend (another Director) host a conference call last night. This story was shared…and I wanted to share it with you! Enjoy!

So who is a woman of the direct selling profession? She is many things. She is North American, Australian and Asian. She's Latin and European. She comes in all shapes and sizes: large and small and short and tall. Her hair is black and brown and blond – and silver. She comes from every walk of life: From family farms and average, ordinary towns to big, sophisticated cities.

The typical direct selling professional is a married woman, a wife who loves her husband and children. She's also a divorced mom determined to work at home and raise her kids. She's a grandmother, toned, tanned, tuned in and out to win the second half of her life. And in very sad situations, she's a mistreated woman seeking to escape an abusive relationship. She's a no-nonsense corporate career woman who hit her head on the “glass ceiling” one too many times – and a sensible, single woman who's decided that rather than “marry a millionaire” she'll just become one. She is a Ph.D., a high school dropout and everything in between.

But no matter her nationality, shape or size, no matter her education, race or religion she is the feminine face of free enterprise.

She's business in blue jeans; wholesale in high heels; an entrepreneur in an evening gown. Her energies drive the world's economy. Her efforts mesh the gears of international commerce. Her time and talent puts food in the fridge, clothes in the closet and cars in the carport. She keeps factories functioning, freight cars filled, and trucks trucking.

In fact, if all the multiplied millions of women in direct selling stopped work for one week, the world's economy would stumble to a standstill. She is a strong woman. Part angel, actress and acrobat, she is a multi-tasking miracle – she can fold laundry, repair a bike, prepare a dinner, change a baby, change a tire and host a conference call – all at the same time. A fusion of
model, missionary and magician, she can wrench ninety minutes from an hour, squeeze eight days out of a week and 40 days from a month. She can meet a month end production deadline dead center – and although she may not feel it, she's drop dead gorgeous.

She is a strong woman. She can be found anywhere: From a concourse to a convention center. You'll find her on a laptop in a coffee shop, hosting an in home presentation, up front training or sitting in a seminar listening and learning. But mostly you'll find her at home…because that's probably why she chose direct selling in the first place. She really wants to work from home.
An independent sales representative, she is the CEO of her own corporation. Her corner office commands a sweeping view of her back yard and her kids at play.

In the beginning her desk may be a folding card table with a milk crate credenza but it's a real office just the same – the nerve center of the greatest operation on earth. This lady of direct selling is courage, character and consistency, leadership, loyalty and love. She loves God. She loves her family. She loves her company. She loves her products. She loves people. This direct
selling dynamo never meets a stranger. She simply has no time to be timid.

From grocery checkouts to waiting rooms to county fairs she is the world's most effective and natural networker. She is prospecting and presentations; recruitment and retention. She is on-line enrollment and education, bookings and benefits, motivation and more. She's a team builder, cheerleader and star player all in one. As a consultant, counselor and coach she is persistence, patience and profit…and a little prayer.

She's a strong woman. In a world where clarity is a rarity, she knows what she wants. Instead of taking care she's taking charge. While protecting the present she is planning the future. While others wish, she works. While others are making excuses, she is making money. The very reasons why some women say they can't succeed are the compelling reasons why she must.

She is a strong woman. She is a tough-minded optimist. Pleasantly persistent she moves from rejection to rejection without losing enthusiasm. She knows that her sales are in direct proportion to the number of times she is willing to open herself up to being let down. She doesn't enjoy it any more than anyone else but has come to terms with rejection and refuses to let it stop her from pursuing her goals.

She is a strong woman.

18 Months in the life of Thirty-One

Today marks 18 months with Thirty-One...and we haven't looked back since! Brooks is in complete awe of my success and we both feel incredibly blessed! Thirty-One has allowed me to stay at home with my daughter, which is my "why"..."why" I am with the company.

Most people are curious how much income a consultant makes or can make. First of all, let me tell you...if you work your business, it will grown and your income will grow. Loving Life and Thirty-One!!

I'm a bit behind on my blog, but all for a good reason! I have been so busy!!

Delilah and I went to Thirty-One's National Conference (Ohio) in July and both fell in love with Thirty-One all over again!! It truly re-solidified why Thirty-One is in our lives!!

(Cindy truly seems so genuine!! One of the girls you just want to hang out with and watch a fun chick-flick!!)

One of my favorite parts of conference was finally meeting my fabulous Director, Amanda Graves!! She is one of the founding consultants for Thirty-One and a Senior Executive Director! I want to be like her when I grow up!! She is truly amazing and I feel so fortunate to be on her team!!Amanda and I with all our ribbons!

My favorite part?? Anyone who promotes to Director, Senior Director or Senior Executive Director gets to cross the stage and have a short photo opp with Cindy!

I received 3 white roses for promoting to Senior Consultant (SC), a dozen red roses for promoting to Director and a framed Thirty-One $1000 bill for receiving my bonus!! Delilah and I got stopped in the airport because of our flowers...they thought we were in a wedding!

I can't say enough good things about Thirty-One and what it has done for my family! It has truly allowed me to become a Stay-At-Home Mommy/Work-At-Home Mommy! I wouldn't trade it for the world!!

Brooks and I thought we were going to make sacrifices by allowing me to stay at home...however, through Thirty-One we have earned two vacations!! My husband and I are about to join other Directors and fly to Mexico for the Leadership Trip!! In addition, I earned a Carnival Cruise for two and we will be departing from Galveston in February and going to Key West, Freeport and Nassau (Bahamas). We can't wait!! ...although it does make us a bit teary to leave our little girl behind.

I cannot wrap my head around how fast Thirty-One is growing! My team is a direct reflection of this! For the month of August, my team gained 40 new consultants (we grew by 50%!! ...from 80 to 120!!). I also set a team record and had 14 personal recruits last month!! As of today, my team has 135 women...not even a year and a half after I joined.
